Seventh Graders Visit Asheboro Zoo
On Monday, March 27th, HCA seventh graders took a field trip to the Asheboro Zoo. Mr. Hunter and Mrs. Michelle Quinn, the co-coordinators of the trip, were happy to afford the students with the opportunity to relax and experience a unique learning opportunity. Students were able to learn about animals and their habitats in this experience.
The students enjoyed viewing all of the animals and learning many interesting facts about them. The NC Zoo is divided into two sections- North America and Africa. Will Huff, a seventh grade student, said, "We really liked looking at and learning about all of the wildlife. The gorillas in North America were my favorite." Blake Daniel said that her favorite part of the park was Africa because she enjoyed viewing the elephants and zebras. Many students enjoyed riding the tram between the sections of the park.
Special thanks goes out to those parents, volunteers, and chaperons who helped to make the trip a success.

“BOOKS OPEN DOORS” Celebration
This year we decided to change things up a little bit…instead of the Illustrate your Favorite Caldecott Award contest we have every year, we are going to have “Books Open Doors” Celebration. The idea is for every homeroom to choose a book they have read as a class. Have the students decorate your classroom door with the title of your book and author, and let them color or cut out patterns of things you can find or have to tell about your book.
The doors need to be decorated by Tuesday, March 20th. We will have a celebration party on Thursday, March 29th. On this day each child can come dressed in some way like a character from the story. We will have all classes view doors, hallway, and bulletin boards to be introduced to the books. We will end with cookies and juice for everyone!
This is meant to be a FUN celebration, not something to stress over. The costumes for the kids do not have to be elaborate, head to toe outfits. It can be as simple as the activity that first graders did after reading Johnny Appleseed in the fall, they wore the “hats” on their head to school.
Each teacher will receive a $10.00 gift card to Barnes and Noble for purchasing books for their classroom libraries. The winner of the door contest, voted on by students and teachers, will receive an extra $10.00 gift card.

Beta Club Chapel
By: MaryKate Murray (9th grade)
On Wednesday, February 22, 2012, Harrells Christian Academy had a chapel program dedicated to their Junior Beta Club and Senior Beta Club. In this chapel, old members got to march down the isles followed by those to be inducted into the Beta Club’s. Sr. Beta Club sponsor Mrs. Ruth Ann Parker exclaimed, “I’m so very proud of these young people. Beta students are typically involved in so many things inside and outside of school. It is amazing that these students can keep a 4.0 GPA and still participate in sports, clubs, church, and community groups. It is a pleasure to be able to work with them and watch them grow in the areas of leadership and service.” To start of the chapel, Grayson Fussell lead everyone in pledges to the Christian Flag and the American Flag. Then Hannah Verrilli did a morning prayer, followed by Matt Maready’s welcome. Catherine Armstrong then read the qualifications for the Jr. Beta Club while Ben Roberts read them for the Sr. Beta Club. Will Huff did an introduction to the “keys.” John Thomas read about the Key of Achievement, Adam Bowker read the Key of Character, Kerri Graham read the Key of Leadership, and Marianna More read about the Key of Service. Ben Roberts read a closing for the “keys.” The Jr. Beta inductees were then inducted into the club. They had to repeat a pledge read by Catherine Armstrong and then Mr. Josh Hunter and Mrs. Ellen Moody presented twenty-four new members with their certificates. Ben Roberts read the pledge for the new Sr. Beta Club inductees. Mrs. Beverly Bridgers and Mrs. Ruth Ann Parker presented nineteen new members with their certificates and the senior members of the club pinned them with their Sr. Beta Club pins. Ben Roberts and Sr. Beta inductee representative Ashley Usher then exchanged the “keys.” Senior Beta members than sang a song followed by the receiving of their senior beta cords presented by their sponsors. Mrs. Beverly Bridgers did a report on the Senior Beta Club convention and Mr. Josh Hunter did a report on the Junior Beta Club Convention. Dr. Ike Southerland closed this ceremony with a benediction.
HCA Terrific Kids
By: Gabrielle Johnson (12th grade) and Sara Moore (12th grade)
Every six weeks the elementary teachers choose a terrific kid out of their class. This student shows certain quality Christian character traits. This month the theme was being diligent. Joseph from the bible was our role model for this trait. Where ever he found himself, whether it was at his father’s house, at Potiphar’s house, or in jail; he remained faithful to God and diligent in his work. By being diligent, he became a ruler of Egypt. Diligence is a key trait to exhibit and will help you to succeed. Congratulations to all the terrific kids this month!

The way of balancing one’s life is remembering that each breath we breathe, each moment we are given, could be our last. We are not promised tomorrow. By keeping this thought in our minds, our actions, and our words, our direction can’t help but be impacted for the positive.
Susan Skaradek
The most important lesson to me in life is to trust in God and lean not on my own understanding. This was driven home over a series of life-lessons. I often repeat to myself, “The joy of the Lord is my strength,” and “in his presence is fullness of joy.” At times when things seem tough, I seek His presence for restoration.
If I could live my life again, I would have given my heart to Jesus much sooner, sparing my loved ones the grief and heartache I have caused them as a result of poor choices and decisions. Ones having the most impact on my life would be my father, cousin Ellie, and friend Donna who never gave up on me. They continually grounded me, turning me back towards God. I used to closely relate to Thomas the doubting disciple until I prayed for the healing of doubt and disbelief. Now I find myself likened to David, who danced before the Lord with unbridled freedom.
The advice that has had the most influence on my life came from my mother before her passing at a young age. She always said, “Love one another, be kind to others, and give a smile to those who don’t have one.” The ingredients for a successful life would be love, patience, integrity, and always forgive.
The way of balancing one’s life is remembering that each breath we breathe, each moment we are given, could be our last. We are not promised tomorrow. By keeping this thought in our minds, our actions, and our words, our direction can’t help but be impacted for the positive.
The first place I turn to for guidance is my prayer closet. I get on my knees, alone with God, the lover of my soul, who knows me better than any other. He knows what I am about to say before a word is ushered from my lips. There are some situations in life that even after prayer, I speak to my father or friend for more wisdom and clarification on the spiritual realm.
My outlook is changed drastically when I turn to father God, knowing full well He wants what is best for me and I trust Him with my life completely. He loves me. He longs for my presence, my friendship, and my love in return. He lovingly echoes a voice that bids me to come unto Him.

Eyes for Brazil
According to the World Health Organization, 284 million people worldwide suffer from poor vision simply because they do not have access to or cannot afford care. In some countries, a pair of eyewear costs more than a month’s salary. Poor vision negatively impacts a child’s ability to learn in school and robs an adult of independence, mobility and quality of life. (onesight.org)
Many people across the globe cannot see clearly because they do not have the money to purchase new eyeglasses. The National Junior Beta Club at HCA is trying to change that situation. We are collecting old glasses to give to a Lens Crafters representative to take to Brazil.
Help support our mission, entitled Eyes for Brazil, by giving your used glasses to any member of the National Junior Beta Club today! To learn more, visit www.onesight.org.
