Fifth grade students in Mrs. Denning's class read Holes by Louis Sachar. They created the posters below providing people with some advice on how to survive Camp Green Lake.

Eyes for Brazil
According to the World Health Organization, 284 million people worldwide suffer from poor vision simply because they do not have access to or cannot afford care. In some countries, a pair of eyewear costs more than a month’s salary. Poor vision negatively impacts a child’s ability to learn in school and robs an adult of independence, mobility and quality of life. (onesight.org)
Many people across the globe cannot see clearly because they do not have the money to purchase new eyeglasses. The National Junior Beta Club at HCA is trying to change that situation. We are collecting old glasses to give to a Lens Crafters representative to take to Brazil.
Help support our mission, entitled Eyes for Brazil, by giving your used glasses to any member of the National Junior Beta Club today! To learn more, visit www.onesight.org.

"Together we Play, United we Fight"
| 2012 Pink Out T-Shirt |
Dear HCA Family-
Yes the time is here again..... PINK ZONE Basketball at Harrells Christian Academy!! The PINK ZONE, now called "Play 4Kay" by the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association), was created by the late Coach Kay Yow of NC State University before breast cancer took the ultimate toll on her body. Harrells Christian Academy joined the fight to raise funds to help find a cure for breast cancer and other cancers by hosting PINK ZONE basketball games. This year will be our 4th annual! Even though four years is great, it makes me sad that as an HCA Senior, this will be my fourth and final PINK game as part of the HCA Varsity Girls Basketball team.
Words can’t describe how much I appreciate all of your support, energy, help, and generosity in making the PINK ZONE come to life and be such an exciting and tremendous success! Watching our HCA gym transform into PINK for a night seems to always bring a magical feel to everyone. "Together we Play, United we Fight" was the t-shirt slogan for last year and it really sums up what PINK night is all about! Beginning in 2009 we raised $2,321.25. We raised $4,488.25 in 2010, and $5,603.93 in 2011!! Every year has gotten better and better. I hope that you will help me make PINK 2012 the BEST yet!!
This Friday, January 20th is our 4th Annual PINK ZONE. Games start at 3:15 with JV Girls followed by JV Boys at 4:30. Varsity Girls start at 6:00 with Varsity Boys following at 7:30. If you haven't been to a PINK ZONE basketball event then you really need to come out and experience it. We will have hamburgers, PINK baked goods, our 2012 t-shirts for $15, shoot-outs, knock out, raffles, prizes, a most spirited pink supporter contest, and halftime entertainment you won't want to miss. Our basketball teams spend a lot of hours in the gym practicing, two and sometimes three times a week playing games and traveling to distant schools, and your support means so much to all of us. So come on out and don't forget to wear PINK!
To my Great Grandmothers, Grandmother, and to all women who have been diagnosed....your battle, courage, and fight against this disease is inspiring to us all. To my grandmothers, mother, sisters, aunts, cousins, teachers, friends, and women everywhere, WE fight for YOU!
To my sisters Chloe, Sophie, and Acee....I pass this torch of the PINK ZONE to you! Chloe, getting to play side by side with you this year has been the best. I look forward to getting to share this final PINK ZONE with you! I know this event will continue at HCA and that it will always be as special as it has been since its creation. Harrells Christian Academy IS making a difference!!
Together we Play & United we FIGHT,

Box Tops for Education
Box Tops for Education is a simple and terrific way to support HCA! Look for the label (shown on the left) on General Mills Products. Cut out that label and bring it to Mrs. Joy Usher at school. (Mrs. Usher also collects labels from Campbell's soup.)
Mrs. Usher submits those labels, and in return, the company sends us a check for all the box tops received. The box tops are usually valued at .10 or .15 a piece.
This money goes to purchase new books in the library, AV equipment, videos, items to help with classroom curriculum or reading program needs.
We certainly appreciate all the efforts of our parents to help our school obtain needed materials!
If you have questions, please contact the school! Thank you for supporting HCA!

Sampson County Chamber of Commerce Member of the Week!
Chamber Member of the Week goes to HCA
By: MaryKate Murray
On January 9, 2012, the Sampson County Chamber of Commerce awarded “Chamber Member of the Week” to Harrells Christian Academy. This award is granted to a different member each week. Recipients of this award receive the “Chamber Member of the Week” sign to put in the front of their business, balloons, and a box of donuts. If you are granted with this award, you get your picture taken with the sign, and given the opportunity to fill out a local business profile. Then, the Chamber will send this to local newspapers for publication and it will be displayed on the Chamber’s website. Chamber of Commerce President, Gary Mac Herring, presented HCA with this award. Also joining Mr. Herring was Star Telephone, Safe Data, and many other businesses. HCA has been a member of the Chamber for a number of years and this is the first year they have ever been granted with the honor of this award. When asked if he expected this award, Headmaster Dr. Ronald Montgomery replied, “No, it was not anticipated, we did not know anything about it until last Thursday.” Dr. Montgomery also stated that he hopes we are awarded with this honor again in the future, because it is always good to be recognized for the excellence that goes on at HCA.
